Navy Classroom

She had held that book in her hands so many times

In that exact place

day by day

The book seemed to take the shape of her hands and was smooth where she held it

almost soft

perfectly comforting to her

a security blanket

She read from it in a practiced, steady voice

eventually holding back tears

she finishes and realizes just where she is

and what she’s been doing

spilling her soul

for a class of strangers in a circle around her

She gave an instinctive, nervous laugh

to shudder away the tears

then shut the book

and sat down

“naked soul in front of these people”

“What was I thinking?”

“I’d better not get an A”
