On Sorrow

From eyelids so high and graceful

glistens

the soft memory of your pain.

nothing to stop

or wipe away

all your silent tears.

And listening now, into the morning–

cloudy clear grey,

you wish they’d come

and bear you off:

a world with no more pain.

But joy is absent

without the sadness;

we endure the rests

to make way for the music.

Don’t stay your tears,

 let

them

come

no laughter in heaven

wash me in today.
